Understanding wicca is a difficult task, but after reading the few known elements of the belief system, you can start getting a small insight into its real meaning. The entire idea behind wiccan tattoos can be understood by knowing about these elements of wicca.
•The first and most important declaration that the practice of wicca requires people to make is “Do, what you will so long as it harms none.”
•There is a God and a Goddess to deify according to this practice, but many people believe that only the Goddess is the one who is worshiped.
•Similar to law of Karma, wicca has ‘The Law of Threffold Return’. According to this, whatever energy you put out in the world (either good or bad), will return to you three times stronger. Also read about some popular wiccan names.
Designs for Wiccan Tattoos
The tattoo design that is pertinent to wicca can be designed in many different ways to portray the individual’s belief system. The design that is chosen and what it illustrates depends on the person’s private thoughts. As mentioned earlier, the Goddess is assumed to be the Supreme being in the belief system, and many wiccan tattoos are made as a homage to the Goddess. These designs can be made to portray Mother Earth as Goddess Gaea, the giver of life, carrying or supporting the male God. This design shows her superiority. The Goddess can also be depicted as the Moon, thus standing in stark contrast to the male God, the Sun. This further illustrates the ancient Chinese custom of Yin and Yang, the two opposing forces of duality. The concept of the Triple Goddesses, (as seen in Celtic wiccan tattoos), can also be portrayed by showing the three stages of the Goddess’s life – the maiden, the mother and the crone. These deities are very popular amongst many world religions.
Different sects of wicca give different degrees of importance to the male God. While some sects consider him to be the Supreme Being, others view him as a mere companion of the Goddess, while some others give him no importance at all. He can be portrayed as the Sun, to counter the Moon of the Goddess. Alternately, he is normally believed to be a horned man, with a ram’s head, and hooves for feet. In some instances he also has wings. No doubt, this similarity to the devil, or Satan, from religions like Christianity, have led some people to relate wicca with satanism, or something evil. In reality, wiccan tattoos display nothing but a strong urge to worship nature as an independent entity, that is above all living beings.
